How will Caddo and Bossier Parish Schools handle Louisiana's new 10 Commandments law?

All public classrooms in Louisiana, from kindergarten to state-funded universities, will soon feature displays of the Ten Commandments, per a new law signed by Governor Jeff Landry on June 20.

Caddo Parish and Bossier Parish Schools will conform to the recently instituted legislation, consistent with the laws of Louisiana.

Every year the legislature creates a multitude of new laws that impact public education and school systems try their best to implement them to the fullest extent of their ability, Bossier Parish spokesperson Sonja Bailes said.

"In this case, as with any legislation, Bossier Schools will adhere to what is required in accordance with state and federal law," Bailes said. "How and when that will happen is yet to be determined."

Caddo Parish Schools will continue reviewing all bills signed into law following the legislative session, director of communications and marketing Marquel Sennet said. Sennet said those laws will be implemented based on the guidance the district receives from the state.

Each public school district must display the Ten Commandments in every classroom by January 1, 2025. The law requires the Ten Commandments to be displayed in a large, easily readable font on a poster or framed document with a minimum size of 11 inches by 14 inches. The display should also feature an accompanying three-paragraph explanation of their significance in American history.

In the language of the law, including the Ten Commandments in the education of Louisiana children is "part of our state and national history, culture and tradition."

The statue allows for the display of other historical documents like the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence, and the Northwest Ordinance in classrooms, though it does not require schools to do so.

The legislation was proposed by Republican Haughton Rep. Dodie Horton, who insisted the displays aren't advocating for any specific religion. Civil liberties groups have since filed a lawsuit seeking to block the law as unconstitutional.
