ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Sunflowers will be on display, highlighting their vibrant bursts of gold at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in Spanish Lake.

The staff of the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) has planted many sunflower plots that will be showcased throughout July and August.

The exhibit is annual tradition at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area but was delayed this year due to the drought conditions in the spring.

The MDC has been planting sunflowers for many years in honor of their management of mourning doves. The area is known for dove hunting and taking photos. The large flowers typically attract birds with their supply of seeds and create cover for the hunters who pursue them.

The crews with the MDC managed the timing of the plantings this year throughout the 4,300-acre space to extend the blooming periods for a longer time. It typically takes 60 days for sunflowers to begin flowering after planting.

MDC asks visitors not to pick the sunflowers. Visitors should park in designated parking lots and shoulders to avoid blocking roadways.

The Columbia Bottom Conservation Area is located at 801 Strodtman Road and is open every day from a half hour before sunrise until a half hour past sunset.
