PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. ( DC News Now ) — First responders rescued 11 people from disabled boats in the Potomac River on the Fourth of July.

The Prince George’s County Police Department (PGPD) said that it received a distress call just before 10:55 p.m. about a boat that had hit an unlit buoy near Piscataway Creek. Seven people were on the boat, and they reported that it was “rapidly taking on water.”

Another vessel operated by a good Samaritan tried to respond to help, but it got tangled up in the other boat’s lines. Two adults and two children were on that boat.

Units from the PGPD Marine Unit, Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) Marine Unit, Prince George’s County Fire Department Volunteer Marine Rescue, the D.C. Fire Department and the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Harbor Patrol responded to find the boats.

MPD’s helicopter responded as well and found it with thermal imaging technology. It was able to direct responding boats there.

PGPD said that a private tow boat brought the sinking ship to a nearby marina and FCPD’s Marine Unit was able to rescue the seven people on board. PGPD units towed the other vessel and its passengers.

“This operation underscores the exceptional coordination, dedication, and professionalism of all officers involved. Their quick and effective response ensured the safety of everyone involved, demonstrating their commitment to protecting our community and waterways. We are immensely proud of their efforts and grateful for their unwavering dedication,” PGPD said in a statement.
