Long-time Gaston County Sheriff’s Office deputy Phillip Maxwell passed away unexpectedly Thursday morning while on duty at the county's detention center.

According to sheriff's office, Maxwell experienced a medical emergency that ultimately led to his passing.

Maxwell served four years in the United States Army, and nine years in the Army reserves before joining the Gaston County Sheriff's Office, it said.

Gaston County Board of Commissioners Chairman Chad Brown responded to the news in a press release, saying, “On behalf of the Gaston County Board of Commissioners, I want to express my deep sadness at the loss of one of our Gaston County Sheriff’s Office deputies today. Deputy Maxwell served both his community and his country during his 20 years at GCSO and more than a decade in Army active duty and the Army Reserves. We send our prayers and love to his family, his loved ones and all those who knew him and worked with him at the Sheriff’s Office.”
