Fox 35 Orlando reported on Sunday that a police deputy in Florida by the name of Joseph Everett was arrested and charged with a DUI after he showed up to work exhibiting signs of intoxication at the Polk County Sheriff's Office in Florida. Everett resigned after the arrest and failed a sobriety test. After his supervisor asked him some questions regarding his seemingly impaired state, Everett admitted to drinking "about three coffee mugs of whiskey" the evening before his shift, per Fox 35 Orlando. According to the
Miami Herald , one of Everett's bosses "noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage" on the young officer, and the field sobriety test was promptly administered. During the test, Everett exhibited signs of impairment.
"Anytime someone chooses to drive under the influence of alcohol, it shows a lack of good judgment," Polk County Sheriff Grady said, according to the Miami Herald. "If you lack the proper judgment when it comes to drinking and driving, you have no business working in law enforcement. We hold our deputies to a higher standard."
In June, seven Long Island Sheriffs resigned after they faced substantiated accusations that they stole alcohol during raids of liquor stores and restaurants in violation of protocols during the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Department of Investigation initiated an internal probe in May 2023 and 12 members of the Long Island Police Department faced suspension without pay. The report substantiated claims of a "man cave" in a parking garage. Inside the "man cave" investigators found high-end bottles, a fridge, a file cabinet, hookah and snacks. [botmc-promo]
