SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) – Farmers market coupon books are now available to low-income, older adults, the Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA) and of Human Services (IDHS) announced Tuesday.

The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program offers access to fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey from local farmers. Each book contains five $10 checks.

“The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program helps low-income older adults supplement their diets with fresh, seasonal produce,” IDoA Acting Director Mary Killough said. “What’s great about this program, aside from the nutritional benefits, is that it also helps to support Illinois farmers and local food economies.”

Checks will be distributed before the program start date on a first-come, first-served basis. They can be used between July 10 and Oct. 31 with participating SFMNP vendors, a list of which will be given to program members. Participating farmers markets and roadside stands are also indicated by a yellow sign with black lettering which reads, “farmers market nutrition program benefits accepted here.”

“Nutrition insecurity impacts all ages, but especially seniors living on a fixed income,” said Melanie Kluzek, IDHS Commodity and Special Nutrition Programs Administrator. “For those managing chronic health conditions like diabetes and heart disease, increasing access to fresh fruits and vegetables can make a positive impact on their health.”

Program participants must be at least 60 years old, have a single-person household income of $2,322 monthly, or a two-person senior household of $3,151 monthly. Those eligible are encouraged to contact their local Area Agency on Aging for application instructions.
