Marion County Fire Rescue officials said Lt. Nicholas Ghigliotty was taken to UF Health Shands Hospital for treatment. He was later released.

Ghigliotty, who has been with the department for 17 years, was the second firefighter injured while on the job in less than a year.

On Nov. 1, 2023, Capt. Chris Trubelhorn was injured when he and his crew responded to a cooking fire at a doublewide mobile home in the 18500 block of Southeast 20th Place in Silver Springs.

Trubelhorn was taken to UF Health Shands' Burn Unit for treatment.

    About the July 4 fire

In Ghigliotty's case, fire officials said shortly before 8 p.m., firefighters went to the 10200 block of North U.S. 441, where a residential fire had been reported to 911.

On scene, fire officials said they could see heavy smoke coming from the garage. A propone tank had exploded, with an additional tank near the fire, officials said.

Other fire units got to the scene and firefighters began battling the blaze.

As firefighters entered the residence, conditions got worse and Ghigliotty was injured, authorities said. The injured fire official was treated at the scene then taken to the hospital. The fire was under control at 8:21 p.m.
