As Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg gets ready for his massive Lake Tahoe compound to be built, the tech exec shared another video of him celebrating the Fourth of July while out on the lake.
Early Thursday morning, Zuckerberg posted a video to Instagram of himself wakeboarding while wearing a full tuxedo (but no shoes), carrying an American flag and drinking a tall can of Coors Banquet beer.
There's no location tag on the post, but the area behind Zuckerberg appears to be the west shore of Lake Tahoe, where his sprawling 10-acre estate is under construction.
It's not the first time the tech exec has filmed himself bearing the Stars and Stripes while out on the lake for the holiday. Back in 2021, Zuckerberg posted a video on July 4 of himself riding a hydrofoil while holding a giant American flag. This year, the tuxedo, sunglasses and beer are adding an extra layer of weirdness, along with his choice of musical accompaniment.
The song Zuckerberg chose to have playing on this year's seemingly patriotic post is “Born in the U.S.A.” by Bruce Springsteen, which is considered one of the most misunderstood songs in rock 'n' roll. Zuckerberg's video uses only the famous chorus that matches the song's title, and skips over the verses that describe a veteran's difficult life upon returning home from the Vietnam War.
Zuckerberg's antics on Lake Tahoe have intensified over the years, from the 2021 video to a slow-motion wakeboarding video in 2022. Last summer, while he didn't post from the lake for the Fourth, over Labor Day weekend 2023 he held a mixed martial arts practice with UFC stars on a floating barge on the lake, which he shared to Instagram.
The post drew a mocking response from X’s Elon Musk, who famously challenged his social media rival to a cage fight last year. Musk commented on his platform: “May he continue to have fun on his yachts. I prefer to work.”
Zuckerberg’s viral video came a day after he announced that Threads, Meta’s social media app designed to take on X, hit 175 million monthly active users just ahead of the first anniversary of its launch.
Threads was launched in July 2023 as a direct rival to X, formerly known as Twitter, which was in the midst of a substantial overhaul after its takeover by Musk, who dismissed staff, overhauled the verification system and cut back on content moderation as part of his plans to allow “absolute free speech” on the site.
Many users, unnerved by the changes, began searching for an alternative — an opportunity seized by Meta and Zuckerberg.
