‘The Bear’s Jamie Lee Curtis Explains Donna’s Forehead Scar In Season 3

From exciting celebrity guest stars to cameos from real-life chefs and more, The Bear Season 3 has its fair share of major moments worth marveling over. But an Instagram post from Jamie Lee Curtis, who plays the Berzatto matriarch, reminds us that sometimes the show’s brilliance is found in subtle details — ones that even the most hardcore fans might miss during their first watch.
In Season 3, one of those small but crucial details involves Curtis’ character Donna. If you missed it, have no fear! The Bear guest star hopped on Instagram to break it down for fans.
“I’ve had quite a few people mention the scar on my forehead from this season of The Bear ,” Curtis wrote in a July 4 post. “It was a remnant of the car incident during the Christmas episode, which takes place six years before the current time. I was just sent this photograph which shows the aftermath.”
For those who need a refresher, Curtis’ character was introduced in Season 2’s famous flashback episode, “Fishes,” alongside other Berzatto family members and friends played by Bob Odenkirk, Sarah Paulson, John Mulaney, Gillian Jacobs, and more. After Curtis delivered what Decider deemed an Emmy-worthy performance as a pained character struggling with mental health issues and alcoholism, the episode ended with Donna driving her car through her house, putting a dramatic end to Christmas dinner.
In Season 3’s first episode, flashbacks show Carmy processing the aftermath of “Fishes,” and though he and his sister Sugar (Abby Elliot) have largely kept their distance from Donna in the years since, Season 3’s brilliant eighth episode, “Ice Chips,” shows an unexpectedly heartwarming reunion when Sugar calls Donna for support after going into labor.
As noted in our review , “Ice Chips” is a remarkable show of vulnerability between two people who love each other deeply, understand the weight of their baggage, and are trying to make long-overdue progress in their fractured relationship. The episode also features the aforementioned scar on Donna’s forehead, which Curtis confirmed is from her character’s Christmas car crash.
The faint line on Curtis’ forehead may seem insignificant at first glance, but to end her Instagram post, the actor wrote, “The beautiful part of the show is that wounds heal and scars slowly fade,” stressing the deeper meaning behind the subtle detail.
That message of time healing wounds is perfectly captured in “Ice Chips” as Donna and Sugar begin to heal their complex mother-daughter relationship. And Curtis’ post proves that Storer and team found a way to make a standout Season 3 episode even more special.
