The Oppenheimer star revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that he used his first-ever paycheck to buy a new sound system, which makes sense for someone who started out his career in a band .
“I think I bought like a record player. Or a sound system, because record players weren’t as cool as they are now,” Murphy said.
Long before the Co Cork native was picking up Oscars, he was rocking out with his brother Páidi in their band, The Sons of Mr Green Genes.
The band, named after a Frank Zappa song, was formed when Murphy was just 19-years-old. Their music was full of "wacky lyrics and endless guitar solos", he told NME last year, and the brothers were even offered a record deal with a London-based label.

However, the Peaky Blinders star didn't think he was talented enough to go into music and instead decided to focus on acting. “I just never thought that I was good enough really," he said.
"It’s why I haven’t pursued the music either. I like to do one thing quite well.”
'Quite well' might be the understatement of the year, given the actor's success. Murphy became the first Irish-born artist to win Best Actor at this year's Academy Awards and just launched his own production company, Big Things Films.
