You may already know that libraries are great for when you want to borrow a book, but did you know that they also lend out other things as well? Depending on where your live, your local library may also rent movies, recreational equipment like canoes, or day passes to some of your area's biggest attraction.

Now, thanks to one woman, we now know that the library also has something else for all of us plant lovers out there, and this may just be how we can finally stop dropping so much of our money on plants each year.

Just kidding, we're never going to stop, but this should at least help offset some of the costs!

We'll forever be in @nikkis_garden_adventure's debt after watching her video where she showed us how she learned about her library's seed bank! Not only is it a great place to get seeds for starting your own garden, but you can also give back by sharing some of the seeds that you already have on hand.

In addition to the tools you'll need to grow your plants, she points out that you can also learn a lot about gardening while you're there, thanks to the library's resource books.

Of course, it's important to note that not every library has a seed bank, and you may want to call your local library first to see if they have one before you head out the door.

One more thing to remember, especially if you're harvesting your seed from store bought vegetables, is that not all seeds are designed to germinate. Some farmers and retailers will genetically modify their seeds so that people can't purchase one of their items to start growing their own crops.

Learn to Harvest Your Own Seeds

If you're lucky enough to have access to a library with these accommodations you'll want to learn a bit more about planting and harvesting your own seeds so you can take full advantage.

That means reading through an online explainer like this one , that will walk you through the steps you'll need to take to ensure your success. Some things you'll need to have on hand are seed starting soil, a lighting setup if you're going to start them indoors , and plant cells if you're going to be transplanting them.

As for harvesting, the most important thing you'll need is something to keep them labeled and stored so that you can keep track of what you have without anything getting mixed up.

Take it from us, once you have a few different seed packs lying around, things can begin to get confusing!

Call Your Library and Ask About a Seed Bank

The only way to find out if your library has a seed bank is to ask them, and the only way to get them to start one is to let them know there's a growing interest, so call your local library today!
