Foundation, mascara and lipstick are all pretty basic parts of a makeup routine. However, when we get into more advanced territory (hello, under eye concealers !), it can get a little confusing. Especially as we get older and the skin around our eyes thins, it’s more important than ever to find the right product for the job.
When it comes to choosing the best under eye concealer for mature skin , it's important to look for products that offer hydration, smooth coverage and a natural finish. We talked to professional dermatologists and a celebrity makeup artist to put together a curated a list of top-performing concealers (including NARS, Tarte and Maybelline options) that cater specifically to the needs of skin as it ages—everything from drugstore to luxury picks. Applying under eye concealer correctly is crucial for achieving a flawless, youthful look. Dr. Hannah Kopelman , a dermatologist who hosts the popular podcast, Derm Club , offers this advice:
"When applying under eye concealer, I recommend starting by prepping the skin with a lightweight, hydrating eye cream to ensure a smooth base. Use a small amount of concealer and apply it in a triangular shape under the eyes. This technique not only conceals dark circles but also brightens the area. Gently blend the concealer with a damp makeup sponge or a concealer brush to ensure it's well-blended and seamless. Setting the concealer with a light dusting of translucent powder helps prevent creasing throughout the day."
Celebrity makeup artist Amy Galloway , who has worked with Vivienne Westwood, Krista Allen, and Dolph Lundgren, adds: "Apply a small amount of hydrating concealer matching your skin tone or one shade lighter under the eyes. Gently blend with your finger or a sponge, set with powder, and avoid over-application to prevent creasing and emphasize fine lines on mature skin."
When Do You Apply Under Eye Concealer in Your Morning Makeup Routine?
Our experts agree that concealer should be applied after foundation.
"You should apply under-eye concealer in your morning makeup routine after applying foundation but before applying any setting powder or other face makeup products to highlight areas of the face and create brightness to the skin," said Galloway.
Dr. Kopelman agrees: "I suggest applying under eye concealer after your foundation. This allows you to see how much coverage is still needed and prevents the concealer from being wiped away during the foundation application."
Dr. Anna Chacon , a board-certified dermatologist, explains the reasoning behind this order: "It's generally recommended to apply concealer after foundation and then blend. By applying foundation first, you can even out your overall skin tone and address most imperfections on the first step. This then allows you to use less concealer and use the concealer to make the final touches, not the other way around. This combo and order, helps prevent a heavy or cakey appearance and helps to ensure a more natural looking finish which is typically desired."
"One of my favorite drug store finds," Galloway says, that "does wonders!"
She adds, "It is affordable and comes in a wide range of shades. It has a long-lasting formula which is great, easy to blend, and offers versatile coverage for different skin concerns."
Dr. Chacon notes it's "loved because it is infused with anti aging ingredients like collagen and peptides which are beneficial for the skin. It not only brightens and hydrates the under eye area but it also helps with the appearance of any wrinkles or unwanted dark circles."
Dr. Chacon says it "gives really good coverage without settling into fine lines. It has a creamy texture that blends into the skin really well and also gives you the desired youthful radiant finish."
Dr. Chacon describes it as "super well known and many people's 'old faithful.' It provides full coverage and has a long lasting formula so it's great for anyone planning to wear makeup for a full day. This concealer does a great job hiding imperfections while also hydrating the skin so you get the best of both worlds."
