Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair made quick enough work out of Candice Lerae and Indi Hartwell. Kind of would have rather seen the heels get a win and some momentum.
Bayley defeated Piper Niven. Post-match, Nia Jax attacked Bayley, until Michin and a cane made the save. Looks like Bayley is starting to get more friends finally.
DIY defeat A-Town Down Under, becoming your new WWE Tag Team Champions. After a great tag run in NXT , Ciampa and Gargano finally climbed the main roster mountain, taking out Waller and Theory.
Best Match of the night:
When you only have four matches, this is not all that hard to choose. Especially when one of those four is the main event that we got out of DIY and A-Town Down Under. Toronto and DIY have a history, and it’s a good one once again. New tag champs, and very deserving if you ask me.
Worst match of the night:
I would have to go with the women’s tag match. It was filler, designed to get Jade and Bianca back in the win column. Was too short to do much else with it.
This is an easy call for me: Ciampa and Gargano, otherwise known as your new WWE Tag Team Champions.
Holy Sh** Moment of the Night:
Video package to close SmackDown, with Solo taking shots at Roman not being man enough to keep the title, and also (more importantly) issuing some veiled threat to the Money In The Bank ladder match participants. At least, that is how I heard it.
My guess now? Solo gets Cody in Cleveland, and Heyman and Roman return to prevent Sikoa from achieving a title win.
Botch of the night:
For as good a talker as LA Knight can be, he’s also still prone to fumbling some words. Did it again tonight.
LOL Moment of the night:
Jey Uso thanks Canada for letting him across the border. Then even Drew McIntyre asked him how he managed to get in.
Noteworthy Moment:
Repeating what they did in Toronto before, Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano once again hold tag team gold. Took them a little while to get here, but I am very happy that it happened one more time.
Overall lowlights:
It’s a knock on a two hour go home show ahead of a show featuring a match like Money In The Bank. You want to feature everyone, but still have a good show. It wasn’t a bad show, but light on wrestling. The main event got a lot of time, and deservedly so. Just, a lot of time spent on talking.
Also, yes, I get that Solo and the Bloodline is a huge storyline. But I would not have aired the Sikoa video after such a big win for DIY. Just my opinion there.
Overall highlights:
The opening segment was well done. They called out that only one man in the match-Drew McIntyre-has held a world title. He may be the favorite to win on Saturday (or maybe Jey), but the takeaway for me? Odds are strong that we get someone holding the briefcase in Toronto who has never held a world title before. Of course, we could see Drew win and cash in Saturday too, as he had promised to do on Monday.
And then there was the main event. As much as I love DIY and was a huge fan of their efforts in NXT, I had completely forgotten how important Toronto was to them. And after this show, it remains so.
It was a go-home SmackDown, that much is sure. The opening segment for the men did a good job, but for me this was all about the tag title match. As much as I would have much rather seen the win happen as part of the PLE on Saturday, I am happy it happened regardless. Winning the titles in a SmackDown main event isn’t the worst option.
