(FOX40.COM) — Two people were critically injured on Friday morning during a mine explosion in Placer County, according to the Foresthill Fire Protection District.

The agency said the incident occurred around 9:45 a.m. at a mine in the Tahoe National Forest along Mosquito Ridge Road.

Foresthill officials said when paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the two people in critical condition before taking them Sutter Hospital in Roseville.

“Further investigation indicates that tools operated in the mine may have created static electricity causing nearby explosives to ignite,” Foresthill Fire said on Facebook.

The agency added that the status of the mine is unknown.

“Mining in the area is common and most mines are small individual operator claims. While mining is common, incidents involving mines in Placer County are very rare,” Foresthill Fire concluded.
