Beware the Lone Star Tick: A Threat to Meat Lovers

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A new health threat is emerging across the United States, particularly affecting those with a taste for red meat. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that hundreds of thousands of Americans may be unknowingly infected with Alpha-Gal syndrome (AGS), a tick-borne illness that induces a severe allergy to meat.

AGS is transmitted through the bite of the lone star tick, recognizable by a distinctive white dot on its back. The tick's saliva triggers allergic reactions in those infected, making consumption of red meat—such as beef, pork, and lamb—potentially dangerous. Even gelatin and dairy products can cause reactions.

The symptoms of AGS vary but often include stomach pain, vomiting, diarrhea, itchy skin, and swelling of the lips, face, or throat. In severe cases, individuals may experience wheezing or shortness of breath.

While over 110,000 cases have been reported, the CDC estimates that more than 450,000 people might be unaware of their infection. Most cases have been documented in 13 states from Kansas to Delaware, but the reach of AGS is expanding.

This syndrome doesn't just affect humans; all mammals are susceptible, making it a broader concern for both public health and veterinary care.

The growing prevalence of AGS highlights the need for increased awareness and preventative measures, especially during outdoor activities in tick-prone areas.
