BISMARCK, N.D. — A fresh look to high school volleyball is on the horizon here in North Dakota. Starting in the 2025 season, volleyball will have a three-class system.

This new look will be similar to the three-class high school basketball system that was implemented this past season. However, the North Dakota High School Activities Association Executive Director, Matt Fetsch, says that there could be some potential differences that make will make the volleyball format unique.

“[For] the middle division of volleyball, it’ll just be a matter of how many teams end up in that division with a top down option and teams move it around a little bit,” he says. “If that number shrinks a little bit, they’ll definitely have a conversation. Either is four regions needed or is two regions a better format? The biggest difference would be the state tournament format. The ability to do one state tournament at one site with all three divisions will be a reality there. That’s an event that it just continues to grow. We had the largest crowd we’ve ever had last year. Interest in volleyball is at an all time high and only headed upwards, and they have that event with all the divisions in one building. It’s going to make it even bigger and better.”
