CALIFORNIA – The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is allowing free fishing, July 6 and August 31 as part of their annual Free Fishing Days.

California generally requires a fishing license – $20.26 for one day, for anyone who wishes to fish in the state's public waters. Children under 16 years of age and fishing from a public pier in ocean waters do not require a license.

    CDFW Fishing Guide app

The CDFW website provides a fishing guide app that can help families plan fishing activities. The department says you can use the app to look up:

    • Fish planting/stocking locations
    • Historically good locations to fish
    • Locations of Marine Protected Areas
    • Quagga mussel infested waters

    Fishing in the City

According to the website, some CDFW Regions offer a Fishing in the City program where families can go fishing in the middle of major metropolitan areas.

CDFW says Fishing in the City and free fishing day clinics are designed to educate novice anglers about fishing ethics, fish habits, effective methods for catching fish, and fishing tackle. Participants can even learn how to clean and prepare a catch to enjoy for dinner.
