Hydrangeas and tomato plants improved by 'amazing' kitchen scraps

Hydrangeas and tomato plants can both thrive with the right fertiliser , though tomatoes are more demanding in their nutritional needs.

While hydrangeas can grow without additional feed, a lack of fertiliser might result in fewer blooms .

Tomato plants, on the other hand, are voracious and often find nutrient-rich potting soil insufficient, requiring regular fertilisation to stay healthy and fruitful.

Garden centres are stocked with specific feeds for hydrangeas and tomatoes, but home-made options are available too .

Grace Alexander, a gardening buff, shared her own recipe on the Gardening UK Facebook group, posting: "Good Morning all. This is my homemade fertiliser (used tea leaves and crushed eggshells)."

She added: "It works amazingly on my hydrangeas and tomato plants. I swear they have better flowers and fruit because of it. It's ready to be spread later in the garden."

Eggshells provide a slow-release calcium boost to both plant types and help prevent blossom end rot in tomatoes.

Similarly, used tea bags act like coffee grounds, serving as excellent fertiliser and mulch for both tomatoes and hydrangeas. A key component of plant fertilisers is nitrogen, which promotes robust leaf growth.

Tea leaves are rich in nitrogen, even more so than plant fertilisers. They also contain potassium and phosphorus.

It's important to remove the tea grounds from the bags and dry them before applying to plants. Some gardeners prefer to use paper (compostable) tea bags as a mulch or drainage layer.

Grace also mentioned that she sometimes adds potato peels to the mix, which works well too.
