As part of a study regarding crime in the United States, Omega Law Group analyzed data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the number of arrests per capita in each state from 2022, as well as the most common offense committed in the area. When the results of this study were ranked against one another, it was determined that North Dakota has one of the highest rates of arrest in the nation — especially regarding one certain offense.
For every 10,000 residents of the Peace Garden State, there were 3,962 arrests in 2022, a majority of these being on charges of Driving while Under the Influence. However, even this number is still a far cry from Alaska and South Dakota, which both present far higher rates of arrest (despite SD’s most common crime being the same as its sister state). In contrast to these numbers, states like Maryland, Michigan, and Massachusetts have far lower rates of criminal convictions per capita, with North Dakota having more than triple the number of arrests than the lowest-ranking area on the list.
“Studying arrest rates across different states can provide valuable insights into various aspects of society, law enforcement practices, and crime dynamics,” says an Omega Law spokesperson in a release. “By analyzing arrest rates, researchers and policymakers can identify trends in criminal behavior, while also reflecting underlying social and economic factors that contribute to this, such as poverty, unemployment, education levels, and access to healthcare and social services. Understanding these factors can inform efforts to address the root causes of crime and promote social equity.”
The massive number of offenses in North Dakota is certainly something to be concerned about, and as such, it’s important to know what to do and who to call if you witness or fall victim to a crime.
