Very few wrestlers have been a part of WCW, WWE, TNA, and AEW. One such star is Dustin Rhodes . During his run in WCW and WWE, he went by the name Goldust. It was a very unique and controversial gimmick. Recently, WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross shared his thoughts on the gimmick and the controversies that surrounded it.
While speaking on a recent episode of the Grilling JR podcast , Jim Ross opened up about the time Vince McMahon told Dustin Rhodes to not rub on people.
“I remember that Conrad. That was a specific mandate from the Head Honcho. There’s just things that we did that were not received very well at all. Not received at all in a very positive way. Not entertaining, not funny. Just jaw-dropping controversy. So… but… We had to start taking things away from Goldust that would apply to his presentation. And that included rubbing against somebody. As you described and that’s what it was. So it was… It… We’d see something and say, ‘Oh, we can’t do that again.’ Then we’d change it.
“And so… Because the character itself was controversial enough without adding extra. It’s just going to be that way. I mean, he was what he was. He was open for suggestion, open for conversation. And so, it was just an interesting time. And like I said, every night something would come out of the menu. Something would be eliminated. Illustration being the rubbing against people scenario,” Jim Ross said.
JR also mentioned that there had been a lot of complaints from many people about the gimmick being inappropriate for children.
