DC ‘s Arkham Asylum TV series is no longer moving forward at Max .

According to Variety , an individual with knowledge of the situation confirmed the news that the show has officially been scrapped.

A new project set within the infamous Gotham City asylum could be developed in the future, says the individual, but nothing has been announced.

The series was announced back in 2020 and Antonio Campos came onboard to serve as writer and showrunner in 2022. It was to be set within the world of Matt Reeves ‘ The Batman .

Terrence Winter was originally attached to write and executive produce when the series was meant to focus on the Gotham PD, but he left the project in November 2020 due to creative differences. Giri/Haji creator Joe Barton was then brought in to write, but Warner Bros. ended up parting ways with him as well.

Reeves revealed in a 2022 interview that the Gotham PD show was not happening but that the story had “started to evolve” into what became the Arkham Asylum show, which he described as being like a “horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.”

After Campos joined, it was announced that James Gunn and Peter Safran would be taking over DC Studios and launching a rebooted film and television universe. In a series of social media posts in December 2023, Gunn said that the show was still in development but that it would be set in the new DCU rather than The Batman universe.

As for Reeves’ The Batman world, Max will premiere its crime drama series The Penguin starring Colin Farrell in September. Reeves is also working on The Batman Part II , which will premiere in October 2026.

The Green Lantern TV series at Max is also still going forward but has been announced as an HBO original due to a new content rebranding effort.
