CHICAGO — An Illinois State Police Officer was hit while investigating a traffic crash.

On July 5th, around 3 a.m., the trooper’s squad car was parked in Lane 3 on Interstate 90 near 75th Street with emergency lights activated.

The trooper was out of their squad car assisting the driver from the previous crash exit the car when a Mercedes struck the driver’s side of that vehicle causing it to strike the trooper. The trooper was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Mercedes, Damaya Herriott, 33, was not injured and was cited for the move-over law — failure to yield to a stationary emergency vehicle, following too closely, improper lane usage and driving under the influence.

In 2024, ISP suffered 16 more over law crashes with eight troopers injured. In 2023, ISP suffered 21 of those crashes with seven injured and 25 crashes resulted in 13 injured in 2022.
