LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — A semi truck driver was hospitalized in the early hours of Saturday morning after two of the trailer trucks crashed on westbound I-96 in Ionia County.

The crash happened after one of the semi trucks had parked on the shoulder of the interstate, officials said.

Ionia County deputies responded around 12:36 a.m. to a two-semi-truck crash on westbound I-96, near Hastings Road in Boston Township, said officials from Ionia County Office of the Sheriff.

Their preliminary investigation shows that one of the two trucks had been parked on the shoulder when the other truck, traveling westbound, hit the parked semitrailer from behind.

Officials said first responders removed one of the truck drivers from the cab and transported the driver to the hospital “with apparent minor injuries.”

The other driver was not injured, they said.

The amount of debris along the interstate caused a shutdown of that section of westbound I-96 for several hours, sheriff’s officials said.

The crash is still under investigation.
