Why is painting wood such a controversial DIY project?

Flipping furniture can be a lucrative side hustle, a creative outlet, and a method of sustainable practices. Sharing the flipped projects on social is almost a requirement if you want to promote how good you are and what you have available. And yes, those social posts come with a lot of supporters and naysayers alike. One of the biggest, most consistent criticisms I see about furniture flipping is what DIYers decide to do with wooden furniture. Wood purists have big feelings about painting over valuable wood , especially when it's used to make rare pieces like mid-century modern furniture .

At the end of the day though, it's all about what a furniture flipper feels like doing, since after all, they do have the right to upgrade and remix the wood pieces however they like. DIYer and expert flipper, Abby Askew , also just noted a major factor that the naysayers often overlook: Painted furniture is what sells. She especially debunked the myth about using white paint on wood.

In a previous DIY tutorial video, one person was absolutely not a fan of Abby taking white paint to wooden furniture and did not hesitate to let her know it. "Ew this is terrible," they wrote to her.

"Painting furniture white kills its soul and why would you put fake wood over real wood? This is disgusting."

    Ouch!

However, Abby responded with yet another DIY wood furniture video debunking the myth about white paint on wood.

"Painting furniture WHITE sells," she clapped back.

Abby also broke down the amount she spent on the transformation for newly white wooden furniture compared to what she earns on the finished product.

"Well, I bought them for $25 each, spent $61 in materials, and nine hours of labor on this set and it sold within a week for $475," she wrote on top of the video which displayed her cleaning, sanding, and painting wooden night stands .

Per Abby, the she earned $40 an hour for the work she put into painting the wooden furniture, "all while working on my own time."

"So white is a pretty good color," the creative concluded, displaying a photo of two purely stunning white nightstands.

To be honest, Abby did a WONDERFUL job updating these nightstands that started off as throwaway pieces and ended up looking something I could find priced for hundreds of dollars at West Elm . And despite the naysayers calling out the painted wood, there were plenty of people who, like me, appreciate what she was able to do with them.

"Lol people have some strong opinions about furniture you can find at a thrift store or yard sale," one commenter wrote. "Love the white!! And they look fabulous!! 😍😍😍"

"I love the fresh painted look," another chimed in. "Just cuz it is wood doesn’t mean it looks good."

And the bottom line of it all was shared by yet another commenter, Kris: "People assume their opinion is the only opinion that matters. Clearly, you had a buyer and it's actually THEIR opinion that matters."

Rules about painting wood (or not!) only apply to those who want to follow them. Do what you feel looks best in your space or what you feel your customers will appreciate the most!
