‘My son bullied a girl on the bus - so I marched him over to apologize but that wasn’t enough’

If you find out that your child has been bullying another child, knowing what to do can be tricky. Should you brush the situation under the carpet and discipline your child privately or should you make an example out of their behavior?

One mom, who discovered that her son had been bullying a classmate, shared the steps she took to deal with her son’s behavior in a now-viral TikTok video.

In the video, the angry mom shared a step-by-step guide to how she would be ensuring that her son did not repeat his mistake again.

Carey, who goes by @careymitchh on TikTok, explained how she had heard that her son had got in trouble for what he’d said to a girl on the school bus. She revealed that she was called by the aunt of the girl who her son had bullied, who told her what had happened.

She said: "My son called her niece out of her name when he got off the bus. Because she was Black.”

At the time, the mom said that she was sure it was ‘not my son’ and remembered thinking ‘ain’t no way that was my son’ but she soon realized that it had been her son, leaving her shocked.

Carey said that she didn’t want to let ‘the situation simmer’ so she decided that she’d deal with things there and then, and called her son into the room with the girl’s aunt on speaker, and explained: "I called him in the room with this woman on speakerphone.

"And I said, 'What did you say to that little girl? When you got off the school bus?'

The angry mom said that she could instantly see guilt on her son’s face and that his immediate response was ‘I’m sorry mom’, to which she replied ‘What do you mean you're sorry? So you said it?', and her son told her that he had, in fact, said it.

In the video, the mom explained the conversation she and her son had and said: "'Oh, okay, so you said it you knew it was wrong, you knew you would be in trouble, you knew I wouldn't agree with it, so now you're sorry that you got caught.'"

Once her son had admitted to her what he had done, the distraught mom knew she needed to rectify the situation between her son and the girl he’d bullied.

Carey then asked the aunt for her address and said that her and her son would be coming over to her house immediately, for her son to apologize to the girl in person.

She explained: “I told my son to get in the truck. We had a real long conversation on the way over there about how what he did was wrong and how he was going be completely and totally, 100 percent intentional with his apology. But the apology wasn't even enough for me.

"I made him go in the store and pick this little girl out gifts before we got there. I made him apologize, he gave her the gifts, and they hugged before they left. If this woman had never called me, I would have never known that that came out of my son's mouth."

While no one wants to hear that their child has bullied another child, Carey was thankful that she’d been informed about what had gone on, as it ‘gave her the opportunity to properly raise her son’.

She said: "I would have never been able to correct the problem. If there's one thing about me, I will not defend or condone any wrong actions by my child."

Carey also explained that she tells her children to try and be ‘forces of good’ which is why she ‘never expected’ her son to become a bully.

She said: "One thing's for sure and two things for certain: he's not gonna do it again.”

Other parents were quick to comment on the TikTok, applauding Carey for how well she handled her son’s bullying behavior.

One person said: “This is what being held accountable looks like but it also came with love. Discipline, and compassion. So proud of you and the Aunt for handling the situation like adults.”

A second added: “You’re such a good and sweet parent, you held him accountable.”

While a third commented: “Good for you mama. We need more mamas like you.”
