Summer is all about pool time, fun in the sun, and refreshing treats after a long day outside. For one rescue Beagle named Gunther, taste-testing a cold snack to beat the heat is exactly what this summer calls for.

On July 2, 2024, Cinthanie & Da Boys ( @cinthanie ) shared the sweet video showing Gunther trying ice cream for the first time since his adoption, and it will melt your heart. Watch his complete joy below!

"He’s learning all the best parts of summer," the caption reads. The clip, which is pure joy, begins with "POV: You're a rescue dog enjoying your first ever ice cream cone," as Beagles Gunther and Joey are riding in the backseat of Mom and Dad's car, each happily enjoying a little ice cream cone treat. Gunther takes the whole scoop in at once while Joey takes the slower route by licking and savoring his cool snack.

Many of Gunther's fans responded by joking his method was likely not the best way to go about it.

"Joey’s back there like 'rookie mistake, bro,'" one person wrote. "It was in that moment he realized he messed up," another joked. "He’s got many years of missed ice creams to make up for!" another added.

However Gunther chowed the cone down, he deserves every bite!

    Can Dogs Eat Ice Cream?

Dogs love having a taste of human foods, especially things like pup cups and ice cream, but are these dairy treats safe? According to Dr. Jerry Klein, DVM, Chief Veterinary Officer for the American Kennel Club, ice cream isn't the safest thing to feed your pup. Part of this is due to the way dogs produce less of the enzyme to break down milk after they're weaned from their mother.

“Many adult dogs are lactose intolerant to varying degrees, which prevents them from properly digesting milk products,” says Dr. Klein. “If you feed these dogs milk products, they can experience anything from severe to mild gastrointestinal discomfort—loose stools, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, or gas. Dairy products with high fat content can also cause pancreatitis in dogs.”

Aside from an intolerance, dogs may also have food allergies, they can become obese from consuming too much dairy, and some flavors, like chocolate, may be toxic. Dr. Klein suggests offering dairy alternatives, such as yogurt, "nice cream" made with bananas, or nondairy frozen treats instead.

For dogs like Gunther, one vanilla cone every now and then likely won't do any harm, and since it's his first since being rescued, we're so glad he enjoyed it. Here's to many more good memories, Gunther!
