I’m a Self-Made Millionaire: 6 Items I Still Buy at Five Below

It’s a common misconception that self-made millionaires only shop for luxury brands or don’t closely monitor their savings accounts .
In reality, many individuals who’ve built their wealth still shop strategically. More often than not, a key reason why people become self-made millionaires in the first place is because they’ve learned the value of their money and know how to be frugal.
A big part of this means choosing discount stores like Five Below for everyday household items — like cleaning supplies or holiday goods. While these retailers might not always have the latest and greatest gadgets or name brands, their deals are hard to beat.
GOBankingRates spoke to two self-made millionaires — Cameron Gawley and Eric Neuner, founder of NuShoe Inspect & Correct — about which items they still get at Five Below.
Neuner said that he still finds value in the basics at Five Below, including their office supplies.
“The quality matches what I need, and the prices remind me where I came from,” he said.
Five Below has a wide selection of basic office supplies, including pen holders, scissors, journals, pens, and large paper clips. There’s a color, style, and design for nearly everyone within those aisles.
Storage Solutions
For Neuner, the same holds true for storage solutions. With nearly everything priced at $5 or less, it’s hard to find such value for the price tag at other stores, he said.
When it comes to storage solutions, Five Below has everything from multi-purpose storage boxes with flip-top lids to miniature organizers with drawers to stackable crates.
Cleaning Supplies
Both Neuner and Gawley choose Five Below for cleaning supplies.
“I look for household supplies and basics that won’t break the bank, like cleaning products,” Gawley said. “The quality is good enough and the price can’t be beaten.”
Cleaning supplies can be expensive at most stores. While you might not always get the brand-name goods at Five Below, you can expect to spend anywhere from about $1 to $5 on the essentials. This includes things like Lysol disinfecting wipes and dust-cleaning gel for cars and electronics.
At such a low price point, this is a great deal, no matter how you look at it.
Gawley said he also shops at Five Below for their paper products. For only a couple of bucks, you can buy cloth paper towels, Kleenex tissues, party napkins, flushable wipes, and more.
Of course, the quantity tends to be on the smaller side, but that works if all you need is something simple or for travel purposes.
Toys and Games
“I also buy toys, games and other items for my kids — they go through phases so fast, why spend a fortune?” Gawley said.
Like other discount retailers — like Dollar Tree — Five Below has a decent assortment of entertainment options for the kids, and sometimes the whole family, to enjoy. This includes simple card games — like Go Fish and Crazy Eights. But it also includes more active games like Twist And Turn The Crazy Twisting Game — which is essentially a knock-off of the more expensive Twister.
Five Below also has other classic games, like Tower Tumble (non-name brand Jenga), as well as tennis balls, inflatable bouncer toys, and dodgeballs. And for those who like shopping for seasonal deals, the store tends to carry summer toys, beach gear, and the like.
Besides games and toys, the store also has a pretty good selection of books — from bestsellers to children’s books to coloring books.
Electronics and Other Gadgets
Five Below has got some inexpensive electronics and other gadgets as well, something both Gawley and Neuner often shop there for. This includes headphones, wall chargers, speakers, phone cases, and more. Sometimes, the store even carries name-brand options like wireless Bluetooth speakers.
“Five Below actually has quite a selection and the prices are a steal,” Gawley said. “They get excess inventory from other major retailers, so you can find brand name items at huge discounts.”
Of course, you’re not likely to find the latest gadgets at Five Below. But if you need some inexpensive and practical, you’ve got options.
Bottom Line
Despite having millions, shopping smart at stores like Five Below is still the way to go for many affluent individuals.
When asked why he shops at such stores, here’s what Gawley said:
“Even though money isn’t an issue, I think the thrill of finding a good deal still appeals to me. And I appreciate that Five Below makes these kinds of items accessible to people at lower price points. A few dollars here and there can really add up for families on a budget. So, I like supporting a company that provides value and gives back to communities.”
He added that it’s also important to remember where he came from, and if that means shopping at discount retailers, so be it.
