The boy was taken to the hospital where he died late Saturday night. He was identified as six-year-old Ahsan Payton of Washington, DC.

In a statement , County Executive Angela Alsobrooks said the following, in part:

We extend our deepest condolences to the family of 6-year-old Ahsan Payton, whose life was so tragically cut short. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and with all those affected by this senseless violence. We share your grief and pain.

This incident underscores why we’re urgently working on addressing the pervasive issue of gun violence. It is unacceptable that our neighborhoods, our celebrations, and our very homes are not safe from the threat of firearms. We remain committed to our efforts to remove illegal guns from our streets and protect our Prince Georgians from such tragedies. Every resident has the right to live in peace and safety.
