Spent is a semi-autobiographical endeavour for de Swarte, whose own modelling career abruptly bottomed out. “I napalmed my life in a spectacular fashion,” she says, “and found myself moving back to London with nothing to show for all of my time working in fashion and all of the silly money I made along the way.”

A product of her transition into acting, De Swarte plays Mia (de Swarte). This “cost of living comedy” sees her flee her debtors in America and return to her childhood home. She’s bankrupt, but can’t quite admit it to her mum (Juliet Cowan), her best friend Jo (Amanda Wilkin), or to herself. After a life of haute couture, she can’t go back to hand-me-downs.

Spent embraces the reality of rocketing fuel and food prices through the conflicted, comic perspective of Mia, whose admission that “I just like nice stuff” is tragically relatable. The show also offers a surreptitious thrill of schadenfreude to those of us for whom being broke is the norm.

Also starring Peep Show ’s Matt King and produced by BAFTA-winning production company Various Artists Ltd ( I May Destroy You , Such Brave Girls ), this new BBC comedy-drama is one not to miss.
