    Who was the best area high school team in 2023-24?

    Sure, there’s no clear-cut answer, especially comparing football to bowling to golf.

    However, here’s a chance for fans to make their pick among 33 squads in our MyCentralJersey.com Readers’ Choice Team of the Year poll.

    The area consists of Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset and area Union counties.

    Bernards girls fencing: The Mountaineers won the Somerset County Tournament, and took third at the Santelli Tournament. Bernards also advanced to the state semifinals.

    Bridgewater-Raritan baseball: The Panthers (30-3) had a dream season that included winning the Group 4 and North 2 Group 4 titles by outscoring their six opponents by a combined 32-5. They also won the SCT for the first time since 1996 and took the Skyland Delaware Division pennant with a 10-0 record.

    Colonia boys basketball: The Patriots went 22-9 and became the first public school to win the Greater Middlesex Conference Tournament title since they did it in 2015 by dethroning three-time defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas. Then, after the sudden passing of 30-year-old assistant coach Danny Brix, Colonia mustered the fortitude to win a third consecutive North 2 Group 3 title.

    Franklin flag football : The Warriors topped Hunterdon Central 7-6 in the Big Central Conference Tournament final, finishing the season 7-2 after falling to Wayne Valley in the playoffs.

    Hunterdon Central boys wrestling: The senior-heavy Red Devils won the program’s first-ever Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Tournament championship and captured the Central Group 5 title in a 21-3 season. Anthony Rossi and Thomas Brunetti each reached the state semifinals undefeated with top-four finishes.

    Monroe girls volleyball: The Falcons fell to Old Bridge in the GMCT final, but topped the Knights to capture the Central Group 4 title. Monroe finished 29-4 and beat a handful of other state-ranked teams.

    North Hunterdon field hockey: The Lions came within a double-overtime loss in the Group 3 final of a third consecutive state championship. North Hunterdon finished 17-4.

    Old Bridge boys volleyball: The Knights went 32-0, winning the GMC Tournament, South Group 4 sectional title and state Group 4 championship.

    Old Bridge girls wrestling: The Knights were a tough tournament team with their combination of star power and depth. Old Bridge won the GMCT and unofficially finished fourth in the 30-team Central Region tournament.

    Pingry girls ice hockey: The Big Blue surged to the state championship, despite entering the state tournament at 5-9-1, including wins over reigning champ Morristown-Beard in the semifinals and Immaculate Heart in the final.

    Pingry boys lacrosse: The Big Blue continued their dominance in Somerset County with their third straight county tournament title. Pingry (16-2) put together a 13-game winning streak before falling in the Non-Public A quarterfinals.

    Pingry girls lacrosse: The Big Blue finished 16-6 and repeated as SCT champions by outscoring their three opponents by an average of 19-8. Pingry also captured the Skyland Conference Delaware Division title with an 8-0 record and reached the Non-Public A final for the second straight season.

    Pingry boys soccer: The Big Blue, who finished 17-2-1, won their all-time best 23rd SCT title and the Skyland Delaware crown, and went to the Non-Public A state final.

    Pingry boys tennis: The Big Blue added more notches on the banner this spring by winning their fourth straight SCT championship. Pingry (14-3) also won the Prep A Tournament title and reached the finals of the Non-Public North and the Bryan Bennett Memorial tournaments.

    Pingry girls tennis: The Big Blue continued their run as an elite program in a 13-0 season. Pingry repeated as Non-Public champions, won its eighth straight sectional title (Non-Public North) and fifth straight SCT crown. Pingry also won the Prep A Tournament and the tough Skyland Conference Delaware Division title.

    Ridge boys fencing: The Red Devils made their sixth straight state finals appearance. The Ridge epee unit took the Certulo Tournament title and the Red Devils finished sixth as a team.

    Ridge boys golf: The Red Devils placed second by two strokes at the state Group 4 championship after winning the North 2 Group 4 title by four strokes.

    Ridge girls swimming: The Red Devils had a historic winter by capturing the program’s first state championship with their win in Group A. Ridge, the Somerset County champs, also won the North 2 Group A title for its first sectional crown since 1983 and finished 12-0.

    Rutgers Prep girls basketball: The Argonauts went to the state Non-Public B final for the third straight season, but fell to Morris Catholic for the second year in a row after a hard-fought affair to finish 24-5. Along the way, Rutgers Prep won its ninth straight conference title and fourth straight SCT championship.

    Rutgers Prep girls soccer: The Argonauts outlasted DePaul 5-4 in a shootout to win the Non-Public B championship, their second consecutive state title. Rutgers Prep also won its first-ever SCT crown.

    St. Joseph-Metuchen boys bowling: What didn’t the Falcons accomplish? St. Joseph (25-0) captured the Group 2, Central Group 2 and the GMCT championships. St. Joseph also won the Blue Devil Classic, CJ Winter Classic, the Marisa Tufaro Classic and the Woodbridge Classic.

    St. Thomas Aquinas football: The Trojans notched their second undefeated regular season in three years before a 13-10 loss to perennial power DePaul in the Non-Public B semifinals. STA (10-1) allowed the fewest points per game (6.3) in the Big Central Conference, and scored the second-most with 36.1 ppg.

    St. Thomas Aquinas gymnastics: The Trojans notched a perfect regular season dual meet slate and won their second straight GMC title, the North 2 sectional crown and finished second at the state championships.

    Union Catholic girls cross country: The Vikings were not only one of the state’s best squads but finished No. 10 in the DyeStat National High School Girls Team Rankings. They repeated as the Meet of Champions winners and set the Holmdel Park record with an average time of 18:36. Union Catholic’s other highlights included winning the Non-Public A and Union County meets.

    Union Catholic boys outdoor track: The Vikings checked off all the key championships with team titles in the Non-Public A, Union County Championships, Union County Relays and the UCC Watchung Division meets.

    Union Catholic girls track program: Make room in that trophy case as the Vikings added to the program’s legacy with success in the outdoor and indoor seasons. In the spring, Union Catholic won its ninth straight titles in three key meets – Non-Public A, Union County Championships and Union County Relays. In the winter, the Vikings won their 10th-consecutive Union County Championship and their ninth straight Non-Public A title.

    Wardlaw-Hartridge girls golf: The Rams posted a 13-0 record in dual matches, and finished second in the state tournament, second in the Central Jersey sectional and won their fifth consecutive GMCT. Wardlaw-Hartridge was also second in the Prep Championships.

    Watchung Hills softball: The Warriors went 28-3 and grabbed their second state Group 4 championship in three seasons, and third in eight years. Along the way, Watchung Hills won the Skyland Conference Delaware Division and advanced to its third straight Somerset County final.

    Westfield boys cross country: The Blue Devils captured the Group 4 and North 2 Group 4 championships, while taking second in the MOC. Westfield was also the runners-up in the Union County and the UCC Watchung Division championships.

    Westfield boys ice hockey: The Blue Devils finished 17-4-2, winning the Union County Tournament title and the McInnis Cup, going to the Public South sectional final after five straight semifinals losses.

    Westfield boys indoor track: The Blue Devils had a pair of key three-peats during the winter. Westfield edged Union Catholic for their third straight Union County Championship. A month later, the Blue Devils won their third straight Group 4 title.

    Westfield boys swimming: There was no debate on the state’s best team as the Blue Devils went 15-0 and repeated as Group A, North 2 Group A and Union County champions. Westfield now owns the sport’s most state titles with 28 crowns.

    Woodbridge girls bowling: The Barrons gained redemption against Old Bridge by beating them in the GMCT final to avenge a pair of regular-season defeats. Woodbridge (18-3) also won the Woodbridge Classic and reached the finals of the Central Group 3 Tournament and the Marisa Tufaro Classic.
