Tournament director Lahm praises security measures at Euro 2024

Tournament director Philipp Lahm said he's very satisfied with the security measures at Euro 2024 as the competition enters its final week.

"Security was the biggest challenge. And I think a great job has been done," the 2014 World Cup winner told the La Repubblica newspaper in an interview published on Monday.

So far, there have been no major incidents or violent episodes between fan groups or between supporters and the police at the tournament.

Lahm particularly mentioned the fan marches to the stadiums, "which have never happened before. The fans meet on the city squares and celebrate together: We have worked very hard to make this possible."

Even the occasional displeasure with train operator Deutsche Bahn doesn't seem to have affected the tournament director's positive conclusion.

Some fans from abroad complained about delays and cancelled trains, and Lahm himself once missed the kick-off of a group stage match due to a delay.

"Most of the trains I took were on time or only a few minutes late. We Germans are used to minor delays," Lahm said.

Asked if there was anything negative about the tournament, he replied: "The only thing I regret is that the Scottish fans had to go home too early."
