    Construction projects continue this week

    The following is a round-up of current PennDOT road work and construction projects in northcentral Pa.:

    Lycoming County

    A roadway resurfacing project continues this week on Route 220 southbound in Porter, Piatt, and Pine Creek townships.

    The contractor, HRI, Inc., will be placing a waterproofing membrane on the deck of the structures carrying Route 220 southbound over the railroad and over Pine Creek. Motorists can expect the left (passing) lane to be restricted where work is being performed.

    Resurfacing Project

    The contractor has completed milling operations on Route 220 and will begin wearing course paving operations between just west of the Route 287 interchange in Piatt Township and the Route 44 interchange in Porter Township.

    Traffic Impacts

    Drivers traveling Route 220 southbound can expect the left (passing) lane to be restricted between Route 287 and Route 44.

    HRI Inc. is the prime contractor for this $3.19 million resurfacing project. Work includes milling and resurfacing of over four miles of Route 220 southbound between the Route 287 in Piatt Township and Pine Creek in Pine Creek Township, Clinton County, including resurfacing the ramps at the Route 220/Route 44 interchange (Main Street) and Thomas Street interchange (Route 3027) in Jersey Shore Borough. Additional work includes drainage upgrades, sawing and sealing of asphalt, bridge preservation on several structures, guiderail and concrete barrier upgrades, line painting, and traffic delineators. Work on this project is expected to be completed on in September.

    Bradford County

    A four-year reconstruction project continues on Route 199 in Sayre and Athens, Bradford County. The 2.6-mile project is located .44-mile north of the intersection with Front Street (Route 1056) in Athens Borough to the intersection with the Southern Tier Expressway (Interstate 17) at the New York state line in Sayre Borough. The project begins at the New York state line and works south.

    The week of Monday, July 8, the contractor continues work in the northbound lane on Main Street (Route 199) between Spruce Street and Cooper Street on this full depth pavement reconstruction project. Work includes new pavement, drainage improvements, utility relocations, sidewalk and curb improvements, ADA curb ramp installations, traffic signal upgrades, driveway adjustments, signing and pavement markings and other miscellaneous construction.

    Detour information:

    Northbound cars will follow a .78-mile detour using Walnut Street, North River Street, and East Orchard Street. Southbound cars will be maintained in the work zone.Truck traffic will follow a 7.7-mile detour using Route 220 and Interstate 17 (Southern Tier Expressway).

    Kriger Construction is the prime contractor on this $16.4 million, four-year roadway reconstruction project. The project is anticipated to be completed in the Fall of 2024.d Avis Borough as PennDOT Clinton County Maintenance forces complete surface treatment (oil and chip) preservation work on that roadway.

    Route 187 embankment stabilization project

    Starting Monday, July 8, a portion of Route 187 will close in Wilmot Township for an embankment stabilization project.Route 187 will be closed between Coyle Road (T-414) and Grant Hill Road (Route 2003), while a PennDOT maintenance crew begins repairs on the embankment failure. Work on the project includes excavation, rock placement, drainage work and pavement restoration to stabilize the embankment and reconstruction of the roadway.

    The following detours will be in place for the duration of the project.

    Northbound traffic will use Route 87, Ambrosius Road (Route 2009), and Route 187 in Hollenback, Bradford County.Southbound traffic will use Ambrosius Road, Route 87, and Route 187 in Lovelton, Wyoming County.

    Work on this project is expected to be completed by August 30.

    Route 6 bridge repair

    Emergency repairs are set to begin this week on the damaged bridge in Troy Township. The bridge, which carries Route 6 over Sugar Creek, has been closed since it was struck and damaged by an oversized load on Wednesday, June 12.

    Since the closure, PennDOT worked with industry partners to finalize a repair plan and identify material needs to complete the repairs.

    On Monday, July 8, the contractor will begin mobilizing equipment and materials to the work site to begin the repairs to the bridge. The contractor will begin removal of the damaged truss members and heat straightening of the damaged members that are not being replaced.

    Traffic Impacts

    Route 6 remains closed in both directions between Route 4017 (Leona Road) and Route 3034 (Mud Creek Road), Troy Township.

    Detour

    Passenger vehicles will use Leona Road, Route 4014 (Springfield Road), and Route 14.Large trucks and Commercial vehicles will use Berwick Turnpike (Route 4013), Springfield Road, and Route 14.

    J.D. Eckman, Inc., is the prime contractor for this emergency bridge repair project. Work on this project includes removal of the damaged steel truss members and replacement with new steel beams, heat straightening, and miscellaneous repairs. Work is anticipated to be completed by the end of August 2024.

    Tioga County

    A portion of South Elk Run Road (Route 1007) will be closed starting this week in Sullivan Township for a pipe replacement project.

    On Monday, July 8, through Friday, July 12, South Elk Run Road will be closed between Route 6 and Bungy Road (Route 1005), while a PennDOT maintenance crew performs a pipe replacement.

    A detour using Ritz Road (T-521) and Bungy Road will be in place while work is being performed. Work will be performed between the hours of 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.

    Potter County

    A bridge preservation project will begin Wednesday, July 10 in Roulette Township. The bridge is situated on Route 4003 (Pomeroy Street) over the Allegheny River and this will improve safety and ride quality for motorists by improving the overall condition rating of the structure from poor to good.

    Route 4003 will be closed, and work will begin under a detour. The detour will utilize Burleson Avenue, Maple Street, River Street, and Main Street for a length of approximately 1.7 miles. The structure is 114 feet long and carries an average of 1,010 vehicles daily. PennDOT anticipates completion in early September, but all work is weather dependent.

    John Nastase Construction, Inc. is the contractor for this $2 million project. The Route 4003 bridge is one of three bridges to be improved under this contract, with the other two to be worked on through 2025.

    Centre County

    Drivers can expect the following the week of July 8 as part of the work on South Atherton Street (Route 3014) that stretches from Curtin Road to just north of Westerly Parkway in State College:

    On Monday, July 8, and Tuesday, July 9, three crews will work in the long-term traffic control pattern between Calder Way and White Course Drive. They will make drainage improvements and continue to pour new concrete curbing and sidewalks. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours as traffic will be reduced to a single lane while the work occurs.

    Wednesday, July 10, through Friday, July 12, a single crew will continue pouring concrete. PennDOT does not expect any additional traffic impacts on these days. One lane will remain open in each direction within the project limits.

    Route 504 bridge replacement

    A bridge replacement project on Route 504 (Black Moshannon Road) in Rush Township will begin Monday, July 8.

    The contractor will begin to construct a temporary roadway that will route traffic around the work zone while the current structure is removed. As material is placed for the temporary roadway, flaggers will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

    A six-day detour will be announced at a later date, to be implemented during the placement of a new concrete box culvert bridge.

    Overall work also includes paving, guide rail installation, the placement of pavement markings, and miscellaneous construction. Francis J. Palo is the contractor on this $1 million project.

    Montour County

    Drivers are advised that starting next week a portion of River Drive (Route 2006) near the railroad crossing in Mahoning Township will be closed for a maintenance project.

    On Monday, July 8, a PennDOT maintenance crew will begin removing a failing retaining wall between River Drive and the railroad tracks and replacing it with a new retaining wall. Work also includes pipe replacements, paving, and guiderail upgrades.

    Traffic Detours:

    A car and truck detour will be in place using Clinic Drive, Route 11, Ridge Drive (Route 2006) and Mount Zion Drive (Route 2013).A bicycle detour will be in place using Clinic Drive, Toby Run Road, Ridge Drive and Mount Zion Drive.

    This project is expected to be completed by Monday, August 19.

    Columbia County

    A multi-year reconstruction and resurfacing project continues on Interstate 80 eastbound between just west of the Montour County line and the Route 42 interchange in Hemlock Township, Columbia County, mile markers 228 - 233.​

    The temporary barrier closing the left shoulder has been removed and the shoulder has been re-opened. On Monday, July 8, the contractor will begin placing temporary pavement markings for upcoming milling and paving.

    On Tuesday July 9 and Wednesday, July 10, the contractor will begin milling the roadway surface. On Thursday, July 11 and Friday, July 12, the contractor will begin paving operations. Drivers can expect the left (passing) lane to be restricted. Work will be performed between the hours of 7 p.m. and 6 a.m.

    New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., Inc. is the prime contractor for this $11.1 million reconstruction and resurfacing project. Work includes shoulder reconstruction, roadway resurfacing, structure preservation, signing, and other miscellaneous work. Work on this project is anticipated to be completed in 2025.

    Northumberland County

    A bridge preservation project will begin this week on Interstate 80 westbound in Turbot Township.

    Starting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 9, the contractor will be performing milling, deck repairs, waterproofing and paving of the Interstate 80 westbound bridge over Route 254 near Limestoneville.

    Work will be performed daily Sunday thru Thursday starting at 7 p.m. and ending at 1 p.m. the following day. This work is expected to be completed in approximately three weeks.
