Gainesville, FL - A Gainesville man suffered a broken wrist, chipped teeth, and a fractured hand after a fireworks accident last week.

Authorities say Zion Thomas spoke from his hospital bed in Gainesville, recounting an accident involving fireworks that happened last week.

"It happened in the blink of an eye," Thomas told News4Jax . "One minute I was holding the firework, the next there was an explosion. I nearly lost my hand."

The blast resulted in a broken wrist, chipped front teeth, and a fractured palm in his other hand.

News4Jax reports that Thomas believes the firework may have been expired, though authorities haven't confirmed this detail.

Jacksonville Fire Department Captain Eric Prosswimmer echoed the call for caution, highlighting the potential dangers of fireworks.

"Over the years, we've seen countless instances of serious injuries and even fatalities caused by fireworks," Captain Prosswimmer said.

He urged people to prioritize safety and never hold fireworks while igniting them.
