The Atlanta Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday to approve the selection of Dr. Bryan Johnson as the next superintendent for Atlanta Public Schools.

Dr. Johnson’s first official day on the job will be Aug. 5. Interim Superintendent Dr. Danielle Battle will support him in the transition.

“This is an exciting day for APS as we welcome Dr. Johnson into our community,” said school board chair Erika Y. Mitchell in a news release. “I would like to thank my fellow board members for their dedication and persistence throughout the superintendent search process.”

The Atlanta Board of Education introduced Johnson as the sole finalist for the school district’s top post on June 18. APS, one of the largest school districts in the state with roughly 50,000 students, had been without a full-time superintendent for nearly a year.

“Atlanta is a destination job and I look forward to working collaboratively with the board to ensure our students are prepared for their future,” Johnson said in the release.
