(WTAJ) — You may know that Pennsylvania is called the Keystone State, but did you know that the state’s name is misspelled on two extremely well-known historical items? At least by today’s standard of spelling.

Technically Pennsylvania is misspelled in the Co n stitution and on the Liberty Bell. If you were to look at them you’d see that the state is spelled as “Pensylvania” which is incorrect nowadays.

The spelling with one “n” was one of the acceptable forms in 1787. However, in the Constitution the ‘misspelling’ conflicts with the spelling that was used in the previous article. The state is spelled correctly in Article 1, Section 2.

However, there are other notable mistakes in the Constitution:

    Article 1, Section 10

    • In the section, the word ‘it’s’ appears in a place where ‘its’ should be.

Less of mistake, but more of choice

    • There are several instances in which we see the British spellings of several words. Words like choose, defense and control are spelled “chuse,” “defence,” and “controul.”

While nowadays we’d say that those words are spelled wrong, at the time the Americanized spellings of certain words hadn’t quite caught on yet.

You can read more about other mistakes in the original copy of the Constitution here .

Wanna know something else about the spelling of Pennsylvania? According to a 2021 study by Ditto , it’s the second most misspelled state. The most common misspellings are Pensylvania, Pensilvania, and Pencilvania. “How to spell Pennsylvania” was also searched around 800 times alone in one month.

So just maybe, we’ll cut the founding fathers some slack on this one.
