When planning an out-of-state move, there are many factors to consider. Planning ahead mitigates any unpleasant, unexpected surprises. But even the most thorough person may miss a few details. When you find your dream home, you start to orient yourself. Maybe you spend time looking at the photos of your new property, deciding how you’ll fill it with your unique style.
One of the factors that you must consider when leaving your current state is the weather in the new state. It’s easy to overlook adverse weather when home or apartment prices are just right. But if you’re from a state with pleasant weather like California and you’re planning a move to the east coast, you’re in for some startling weather patterns.
States like North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida all boast beautiful beaches but they also experience hurricanes. FEMA put together a Hurricane Risk Rating to alert the general public, private businesses, and the local and state governments of what to expect in terms of these natural hazards. If you’re getting ready to pack up and call a new state home, it’s worth taking a look at what you will experience in the new environment.
For many, even the threat of hurricanes isn’t enough to deter them from moving. While hurricanes take some getting used to (and some great insurance policies), they’re not an everyday occurrence. Plus, they’re typically predicted ahead of time, which allows residents the opportunity to find shelter or evacuate, depending on the severity of the hurricane.
To determine the hurricane zones people are flocking to, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on population change due to net migration from the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population and Housing Unit Estimates program and natural hazard risk for counties from the March 2023 FEMA National Risk Index dataset. Counties classified as “relatively high” or “very high” risk of hurricanes by FEMA were ranked based on total population change due to net migration from April 2020 to July 2023.
