SM Denim Mills scored two wins for sustainability and innovation.

The Pakistani denim mill announced it was granted the patent for IndiCan, a textile dyeing method that significantly reduces water and energy consumption.

“The IndiCan process represents a paradigm shift in the dyeing of cotton yarn fibers, combining cationic and anionic polymerization techniques to enhance dye fixation, improve colorfastness, and achieve significant water savings,” the mill stated.

Through IndiCan the mill achieves up to 71.9 percent water savings compared to conventional dyeing methods and reduces energy consumption by approximately 70 percent.

The process also enhances the color performance. IndiCan uses “super green compounds to prepare cotton fibers for superior dye absorption, ensuring long-lasting color retention and minimal color bleeding” and a protective secondary coat to improve the durability and resistance of dyed fibers to wash-off and fading.

SM Denim said IndiCan is “poised to transform the textile industry by promoting sustainable water management practices and aligning with global efforts to minimize carbon footprints and promote energy conservation.”  The patent also marks a major sustainable milestone for the Karachi-based mill.

“We are thrilled to receive this patent, which validates our commitment to innovation and sustainability,” said Asif Merchant, SM Denim Mills CEO. “The IndiCan process not only revolutionizes textile dyeing but also aligns with our goal of reducing environmental impact. This breakthrough underscores our dedication to leading the industry toward a more sustainable future.”

SM Denim was also granted a patent for its method to create abstract patterns in woven fabrics. The innovative process utilizes air jet looms with a newly invented shedding mechanism to create intricate patterns akin to dobby structures.

The technology enables SM Denim to offer clients a greater variety of patterns and better fabric quality. The resulting fabrics have superior softness and stretchability, while the method streamlines production by reducing setup time and improving overall efficiency, the mill stated.

“We are thrilled to receive this patent, which underscores our commitment to innovation and excellence in textile manufacturing,” Merchant said. “This breakthrough will enable us to offer our clients fabrics with unmatched quality and distinctiveness.”
