Team USA announces soccer roster for Paris Olympics with big names omitted

The Team USA soccer roster for the upcoming Paris Olympics has been announced with 18 players having made the cut as big names such as Christian Pulisic were omitted following their Copa America commitments. This is largely because men's soccer rosters in the Olympics must have at least 15 players who are 23 years old or younger.

Pulisic captain will instead head back to his club for preseason ahead of AC Milan's next campaign, while other talents such as Antonee Robinson and Gio Reyna will follow suit. The young squad of players consists mostly of emerging stars who have been developed on home soil through U.S. Soccer's Development Academy and MLS NEXT.

Eight of those picked are currently playing overseas, while the rest are plying their respective trades in the United States. Fifteen of those named on the roster have also been capped by the country's senior team, with this the first time Team USA has taken part in soccer at the Games since the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Marko Mitrovic will be leading the team in the French capital this summer as he looks to guide his young team to glory. He spoke with delight ahead of the event, saying: "We couldn’t be more excited to have this group of great players and great people represent us at the Olympic Games.

"It’s a special moment for all of us as they have worked their entire lives to reach this stage. Almost every player developed through our American soccer pathway, rising to become professionals and now they will live their dreams of competing at the Olympics . We’re grateful to the clubs that released their players in support of our mission. Our goal is to make our country proud and we will give everything for the United States."

The over-age players who will represent the U.S. in Paris are defenders Walker Zimmerman and Miles Robinson, alongside midfielder Djordje Mihailovic. Rules for the Games stipulate that each team can only name a maximum of three players over the age of 23, with the youthful roster picked by Mitrovic reflecting this.
