Jonny Heitinga named Liverpool rivals among coaching inspirations alongside Jurgen Klopp praise

Former Everton defender Jonny Heitinga named several Liverpool rivals as inspirations in his coaching philosophy as he continues to be linked with a role in Arne Slot's coaching staff.

Slot got the first opportunity to work with some of his first team this week as the likes of Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott returned to the AXA Training Centre. Many more will not link up with the squad until after Euro 2024 and Copa America, although Mohamed Salah is set to report for duty this week.

While most fans are keeping one eye on the transfer market and the possible signings Slot might make on the pitch, the new Liverpool boss is also looking to make additions to his backroom staff. According to the Daily Mail , former Everton defender Heitinga is in talks regarding a shock move to Anfield after previously working as a coach with David Moyes at West Ham United.

Heitinga played over 100 times for Liverpool's rivals and reportedly knows Slot well. "All I can say now is that I have been approached and that my agent Rob Jansen and I are in conversation.," he said to De Telegraaf when asked about a potential move to Liverpool.

The controversy doesn't end with the cross-Merseyside connection, either. Heitinga has also admitted he has taken inspiration from many of Liverpool's rivals in the early stages of his career, which has seen him work at Ajax as well as his recent role in east London.

“There are a few influences: Ajax’s style from the past with Cruyff, but also Van Gaal, and the relationship that Moyes had with players,” Heitinga told The Athletic . “Pep Guardiola, Diego Simeone are two others. Also Liverpool’s high intensity — when they get the ball, it’s the quickest way to goal.

“I know how I want my team to play. It’s the Ajax DNA with the fighting spirit. The system has changed if you see Ajax, sometimes they play with three No 10s.

“After this season, I’ll finish my Pro Licence and then go step by step. I want to manage but I have to show I have the ability. A team like Everton will always be in my heart.”

Liverpool.com says: Regardless of his connection to Everton, Heitinga is a compatriot of Slot and has an extensive knowledge of the Premier League. These are two vital factors that could help the new boss settle into the role. If his arrival improves the probability of success and potential trophies at Anfield, his connection to Everton should not matter.
