A place in the Euro 2024 final is on the line when historic European heavyweights Spain and France square off at Allianz Arena on Tuesday.

Luis de la Fuente's men dug deep and showed an entirely different side of their game as Spain defeated hosts Germany in an incredibly entertaining quarterfinal tie, with Mikel Merino scoring a 119th-minute winner for La Roja.

The last time Spain reached the final of a European Championship was when they lifted it in 2012. They were dumped out in the semifinals of this competition by eventual champions Italy three years ago.

Meanwhile, Les Bleus came through a penalty shootout to send Portugal home later the same day, after a pretty dour goalless draw through 120 minutes. Didier Deschamps' side are yet to score from open play themselves but are in the semifinals somehow. France reached the European Championship final in 2016 when they lost to Portugal on home soil in Paris.

Spain vs. France lineups & team news

After overturning a 1-0 deficit to defeat resilient Georgia in the Round of 16, Group B winners Spain fielded an unchanged side to take on Germany, with Nacho Fernandez and Ayoze Perez both fit for the bench after returning from respective knocks. But head coach Luis de La Fuente finds his options more limited for this semifinal.

Pedri is set to miss the remainder of the tournament after hobbling off in Stuttgart after being on the receiving end of a strong tackle from Toni Kroos. RB Leipzig's Dani Olmo stepped in for the Barcelona playmaker and is expected to do so again following his crucial goal and assist against the Germans.

However, Spain also face challenges at the back, with two starting defenders, Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand , out due to suspension.

Le Normand, banned for yellow-card accumulation after being booked in the first half against Germany, was substituted for Nacho in that game. The former Real Madrid captain is likely to fill in again on Tuesday, while the 38-year-old Jesus Navas could be handed a start at right-back in place of the suspended Carvajal, who was sent off in the dying moments against Germany. Another possible full-back option is Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo , although he is nominally a left-sided player.

It was thought that Alvaro Morata would be suspended after apparently being booked while celebrating Merino's winner against Germany, but UEFA later confirmed the Spain captain was not shown a yellow card, so he is free to play in the semifinal alongside Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal .

Spain starting lineup (4-3-3): Simon (GK) — Navas, Nacho, Laporte, Cucurella —  Olmo, Rodri, Fabian Ruiz — Lamine Yamal, Morata, Williams.

    Injured: Pedri (knee).

    Suspended: Carvajal, Le Normand.

Deschamps has a strong defensive unit that doesn't need any tinkering, but that France's problem has been at the other end of the pitch in this tournament.

While Kylian Mbappe might have come off late against Portugal last weekend after suffering from fatigue following his short spell out with a broken nose, Real Madrid's new superstar will spearhead Les Bleus' attack in Munich and look to notch a second goal at the European Championship.

The other attackers have all shown flashes of brilliance during games but they have lacked that clinical edge at clutch moments. Ousmane Dembele made a strong claim for a starting berth with a great performance off the bench against Portugal.

After serving his suspension, Adrien Rabiot could come back into the engine room alongside Aurelien Tchouameni , with Eduardo Camavinga making way. Forming what has been a rock-solid partnership at the back, Arsenal defensive sensation William Saliba will partner Bayern Munich's Dayot Upamecano .

France starting lineup (4-3-1-2): Maignan (GK) — Kounde, Saliba, Upamecano, Hernandez — Kante, Tchouameni, Rabiot — Griezmann — Dembele, Mbappe.

    Injured: None.

    Suspended: None.

    Spain vs. France prediction

    • Score prediction: Spain 0-1 France

It was an incredible win for Spain last time out, as they battered and bullied Germany throughout to further solidified their new-found status as European Championship favourites, but it came at a potentially huge cost.

They will be missing plenty of key players through injury and suspension here, and although Spain have a very deep squad and their mojo is all about the team unit rather than individuals, they will be missing some big defensive players for this semifinal, which could backfire.

Spain looked increasingly frazzled and worn out as their quarter-final wore on. France, meanwhile, are generally defending stoutly with their attack being completely dumbfounded, and Deschamps has no idea how to get it going.

Les Bleus' plan would likely be to sit deep, frustrate Spain and attack on the counter with more poise than so far in the tournament. And it could just be enough to unsettle a youthful Spanish side which lacks their opponents’ experience in these high-profile games.
