The remnants of Hurricane Beryl, battering the coast of Texas Monday morning, could bring thunderstorms and the possibility of heavy rain to Central Jersey this week.

According to the National Weather Service office in Mt. Holly, the remnants of Beryl will be the "big" weather story Wednesday into Thursday, with an increase in thunderstorm chances.

The remnant low of Beryl is expected to track to track northwest of the region, according to the National Weather Service, keeping the heaviest precipitation to the northwest as well.

The forecast track has Beryl's center over eastern Texas Monday, and then moving along through the Lower Mississippi Valley, into the Ohio Valley on Tuesday and Wednesday, and into the Great Lakes region by Thursday.

Computer models indicate the storm will be over Lake Erie Wednesday evening with showers in Central Jersey overnight into Thursday.

The National Weather Service says the storm will be moving quickly, which "will somewhat limit the flooding threat unless we see training storms." Training storms are when multiple thunderstorms move over the same region over a period of time, resulting in torrential rains and flash flooding.

The potential for heavy thunderstorms will continue after Beryl passes to the north of Central Jersey as a cold front approaches on Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

Three years ago, in 2021, the remnants of Hurricane Ida brought record rains and floods to Central Jersey.
