JACKSON, Miss. ( WJTV ) – Amid rising costs for nearly everything, a new analysis reveals that Mississippians’ wages are struggling to catch up.

An ADP Research Institute report shows that Mississippi’s median pay and wage growth are among the lowest in the United States. Annual pay was $58,600 nationally; in the Hospitality State, the pay is roughly 24% lower at $44,600. This is the second lowest pay nationally. Mississippi’s median pay growth of 3.5% since June 2023 is the smallest increase nationwide. It is over 28% less growth compared to the national average of 4.9%.

June 2024 data on the consumer price index is not yet available. Between May 2023 to May 2024, the index rose 3% nationally. Since May 2019, inflation rose by 23% nationwide.

Report: Mississippi lawyers make the least money nationally

ADP’s Pay Insights captures the salaries of the same group of almost 10 million individual employees over 12 months. Below are the industries represented in ADP’s analysis.

    Industry Share of employees
    Construction 4%
    Education/health services 15%
    Financial activities 9%
    Information 3%
    Leisure/hospitality 8%
    Manufacturing 18%
    Natural resources/mining 1%
    Other services 5%

Many professionals in Mississippi have the lowest paychecks compared to their peers nationally. According to data compiled by USA Facts, the median annual salary for a Mississippi attorney is $80,540. That number is over 80% higher than the median annual pay. However, it is the lowest pay for lawyers nationally.
