Tiger Woods, the golfing superstar , has declined the opportunity to captain the United States at next year's Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black.

Woods was tipped as the favourite to lead Team USA, but according to The Telegraph, the 82-time PGA Tour winner has turned down the chance to guide his country .

On Monday, it was announced that the PGA of America would hold a press conference the following day to reveal their captain for 2025.

Many expected that PGA of America boss Seth Waugh would name 15-time major champion Woods as the man for the job, but the 48 year old will not be at the helm come next September.

The Telegraph reports that Woods had asked for the captain's workload to be lessened in the run-up to help him take on the role, but no agreement was reached between the two parties. Instead, Fred Couples, Davis Love III and Stewart Cink are reportedly in the running to lead their nation.

Woods had toyed with the idea of taking on the role at this year's Masters, admitting he would sit down with Waugh to make a decision after the first major championship of the year. "It's something that Seth and I are going to sit back and talk about it after this event," he said in April.

"I said I'm going to be busy for a couple weeks, so let me focus on getting through this week and hopefully getting another jacket, and then we can sit back and talk about it next week."

The topic was then brought up a month later, where Woods returned for the PGA Championship.

Speaking at Valhalla, the four-time champion hinted about the workload issue amid his off-course work helping the PGA Tour's negotiations with the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia. "We're still talking," he said when quizzed on the captaincy in May.

"There's nothing that has been confirmed yet. We're still working on what that might look like. Also whether or not I have the time to do it. I'm dedicating my so much time to what we're doing with the PGA Tour, I don't want to not fulfil the role of the captaincy if I can't do it."

"What that all entails and representing Team USA and the commitments to the PGA of America, the players, and the fans and as I said, all of Team USA. I need to feel that I can give the amount of time that it deserves."

Team USA will be hoping to bounce back on home soil next year, having fallen to defeat against their European rivals at the 2023 Ryder Cup in Italy last Autumn.
