7 Injured When Boat Crashed Into Bridge in Florida Keys, 3 Airlifted to Miami

Three people, including one child, were airlifted to hospitals on the Florida mainland after a boat crashed into a bridge in the Florida Keys in the early hours of Monday, officials said.

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, there were six adults and two children on board the Contender fishing boat when it crashed at a high rate of speed into the South Pine Channel Bridge off Little Torch Key in the Lower Keys at around 2 a.m. Monday.

Monroe County Fire Rescue were the first to respond to the crash and used ladders from an old bridge to get down to the sinking boat and rescue those on board, according to the Miami Herald.

Two victims were airlifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in Miami and one was airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center in Kendall, just south of Miami. Four other victims were transported to Lower Keys Medical Center in Key West.

FWC is investigating the crash.
