Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) was widely panned over the 4th of July weekend for a social media post that inaccurately stated some key facts surrounding the founding of the nation.

“The average age of the signers of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 was 44 years old, but more than a dozen were 35 or younger,” wrote Greene in a Sunday tweet, which then listed:

    Thomas Jefferson: 33
    John Hancock: 39
    James Madison: 25
    Alexander Hamilton: 21
    James Monroe: 18
    Aaron Burr: 20
    Paul Revere: 41
    George Washington: 44

“Readers added context James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe, Aaron Burr, Paul Revere, and George Washington were not signers of the Declaration of Independence,” noted an X community note later attached to the post.

The Washington Post’s Aaron Blake shared Greene’s post and commented, “It just keeps happening.” Blake then included screenshots of Sen. Marsha Blackburn , Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC), and ex-Rep Madison Cawthorne (R-NC) also flubbing basic American history related to the Declaration of Independence and the Consitution.

Greene’s post was widely panned on X, including by conservative radio host Erick Erickson who replied, “WTF. Are you stupid? This is embarrassing.”
