    ARLINGTON — The Texas Rangers won the first game of their series against the San Diego Padres Tuesday by shutting them out 7-0. The tone of the game was set early on, as the Rangers led the game from early on and never wavered.

    In the first inning, the Rangers immediately look the lead; Nathaniel Lowe swatted a two-run home run, on which Josh Smith also scored, putting Texas ahead 2-0. The Rangers added to their lead in the second inning when Jonah Heim scored a run on an RBI double by Leody Taveras, bringing the score to 3-0.

    The third inning saw the Rangers score once more. Lowe hit his second two-run homer of the game. Smith also scored on this hit, bringing the Rangers’ lead to 5-0.

    Texas added to their lead again in the fourth inning, when Taveras scored on an RBI single by Marcus Semien, making the score 6-0. A scoreless fifth inning ensued.

    The Rangers added one more run in the sixth inning. Taveras scored on an RBI double by Jonathan Ornelas, bringing the score to 7-0. The final three innings ended scoreless. The Rangers capped off a 7-0 win.

    As a team, the Rangers batted 10 for 32 (.313) from the plate. Lowe and Taveras led the way with two hits each. Adolis Garcia, Heim, Wyatt Langford, Ornelas, Semien and Smith recorded one hit each.

    Lowe, Smith and Taveras all shared the title of leading scorer with two runs each, with Heim adding one run.

    Nathan Eovaldi earned the victory on the mound, pitching seven scoreless innings and striking out six batters, conceding one hit. Jonathan Hernandez pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out one batter and conceding one hit.

    With the win, the Rangers improved to 39-46 on the season. They continued their series against the Padres Wednesday and Thursday and began a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays Friday.
