Earvin “Magic” Johnson was one of the league’s biggest superstars in the 1980s. Many saw him as the best player of the decade due to his consistency as a playmaker and a great leader. However, Magic was always the first to criticize his own play.

Even when he had bad games, he didn't mind external criticism because he was his toughest critic. This self-evaluation made him a better player, as it highlighted areas to improve before the next game or season.

“After every game, I grade myself, and I grade myself hard. I put the pressure on me. After we lose, I think it’s my fault, I could’ve done more. That’s just how I am,” Magic said in a 1987 interview. “With me putting the pressure on myself, I think I play better. Without that pressure, I think I won’t play as hard and as well.”

    Magic performed well under pressure

Johnson thrived when doubted, taking it upon himself to be his harshest critic. This drive to prove himself wrong pushed him to perform at the highest level, continually striving to be his best. Mistakes were natural, but Magic always focused on improving them.

Throughout the '80s, Magic consistently bounced back from bad games by reflecting on his performances and identifying areas for improvement. Though not the Lakers' top scorer, he would return from a poor game with a more aggressive mindset, all while maintaining his exceptional playmaking abilities.

The 1986/87 season, in particular, was significant because it was when Magic embraced being the go-to guy. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was not getting any younger, so the Lakers needed someone to take charge. Performing under that kind of pressure was huge for Magic because he had no fear afterward.

The LA guard knew everyone’s eyes were on him, so he wanted to perform and help his team win under the bright lights. That kind of approach to sports makes Magic a fantastic athlete because he would always work on his game and learn from the mistakes he made.

Self-criticism went a long way for Magic

Magic's self-criticism was beneficial, driving him to improve year after year. This relentless self-assessment made him a better player, as he maintained a healthy approach to the game. His dedication to continual improvement elevated him to the status of the best player in the NBA, alongside his rival and friend, Larry Bird .

Johnson always found ways to motivate himself by being self-critical or looking at pundits who talked about him. He even took the comparisons to Larry to heart, wanting to prove to everyone he was better.

Magic remains one of the best figures in the NBA community because he was a superb player and proved himself through his hard work and dedication behind the scenes.
