BRIGHTON TWP. — Two people were killed in a Sunday evening crash in Livingston County after two motorcycles were allegedly racing, according to Michigan State Police.

Around 6:40 p.m. Sunday, July 7, an MSP Brighton Post trooper noticed two motorcycles traveling at a high rate of speed northbound on Old US-23 near Loch Lomond Road. The cycles appeared to be racing.

As the trooper attempted to turn around and pursue the cycles for a traffic stop, he saw in his rearview mirror that one of the cycles collided with a Dodge Caravan. The van, driven by an 86-year-old Brighton woman, was making a left turn onto Loch Lomond Road from southbound Old US-23.

The cycle, a 2006 Yamaha FZ6-S, collided with the passenger side door of the van, according to MSP. The second cycle did not stop. The cycle rider, a 20-year-old South Lyon man, died in the collision. He was wearing a helmet, but it wasn’t strapped and appeared to come off in the collision.

The collision also caused the death of the van's passenger, a 64-year-old Fenton woman.

Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be a factor in the crash, according to MSP. The investigation is ongoing.
