The Tuscany Region is inviting applicants to live in one of its rural mountainous towns and receive up to $32,000 to make it happen.
The proposal, called Residenzialità in Montagna 2024, or “Residency In the Mountains,” offers selected applicants between €10,000 and €30,000. This money should be used to purchase a full-time residential home in the Tuscan mountains. Applicants must apply for a residence permit for over 10 years and register as an Italian town or city resident. Additionally, applicants cannot already live in a mountain village.
The town or city in Tuscany where an applicant moves should have 5,000 residents or fewer. According to USA Today, 76 towns qualified in 2022.
“The purpose of the intervention is to promote and incentivize the repopulation and socio-economic revitalization of mountain areas, acting in contrast to the marginalization of such areas,” stated a translated excerpt of the Tuscany Region’s proposal.
The money granted cannot help with notary fees, bank charges, or brokerage fees. The funds are also prohibited from going toward technical or design fees, utilities, or insurance. They also cannot cover “expenses registered exclusively to any co-owners of the property.”
Who Is Eligible To Apply For Tuscany’s Residenzialità In Montagna 2024?
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, the legal age in Italy. They must also be Italian citizens, citizens of the European Union (EU), or non-EU citizens with a residence permit. The residence permit must be “valid for no less than 10 years.” Applicants will also need to provide their “digital identity credentials.”
The Tuscany Region allocated €2.8 million, or over $3 million, for Residenzialità in Montagna in its 2024-2026 financial budget for the years 2024 and 2025.
