Personal checks have been one of the oldest forms of payment for centuries, and in some parts of the world they even predated tangible currency. For decades in the U.S., some shoppers have paid by check at the grocery store and other locations, but if you're looking to do so at Target , you'll have to shop elsewhere.

The retail giant will no longer accept personal checks as a form of payment starting July 15. The company said in a statement that the decision was made due to "extremely low volumes" of transactions made via check, per NBC News .

Other widely accepted forms of payment will still be valid at the register. This includes cash, credit and debit cards, digital wallet payments like Apple Pay , SNAP, EBT, and buy now, pay later services like Affirm and Sezzle.

Writing checks at checkout is a notoriously cumbersome process as it often holds up the line and creates a headache for both shoppers and employees. The elimination of checks is a part of Target's greater push to streamline the checkout process with new initiatives like limiting self-checkout to 10 items and opening more traditional staffed checkout lanes.

If you simply can't let your checks go, you can head over to Walmart where they're still accepted.
